Don’t go breaking my heart

A florist delivery van pulled up in front of my house and put on his blinkers.

Oh wow, I thought. I wonder who could be sending me flowers?  I know it’s a little early for Valentine’s day… but maybe someone is thinking ahead.

Be still my heart!

I hid for a minute, not wanting to appear too eager when the delivery man rang our bell.

Waiting. Waiting.

No knock.

No ring.

So I peeked out the kitchen window.

There he was, carrying a huge bunch of roses . . . to the house across the street.

I tell you, it was a blow. In the space of 60 seconds I went from no expectations to Great Expectations.

My disappointment was keen.

I thought I should give the guy a little heads up so I casually walked out to my mailbox to pick up the mail.

“There oughtta be a law,” I said to him as he climbed back into his truck.

“What do you mean?”

“You can raise a lot of hopes by parking in front of people’s houses, you know.”

“I’ve heard that before,” he said.

Some people never learn.
