Some pig

In the past week I have been called 3 words (that I know of). Two of these were said to my face and one was sent in an email. All were adjectives.

I feel a bit like Wilbur the pig in Charlotte’s Web whose life was saved by the words woven into the spider web above his stall. Terrific. Radiant. Humble.

Word #1: While setting out for my morning walk, I noticed my neighbor’s garage door was open. He had gone out early and forgotten to close it. His wife was still asleep upstairs and I hated to wake her up. I walked into their garage thinking I could push the button and exit through the patio door, but it was locked. Not stopping to think about my fitness level, I pushed the button, ran across the floor, leaped over the laser beam, and surprised myself by landing safely in the driveway, crouching with arms spread like an Olympian gymnast in a perfect dismount. As I straightened up, a young man working in the next yard called out to me. “Wow!” he said. “That was agile.”  Agile! I can’t remember the last time I was called agile. I glowed for days.

Word #2: On Saturday I spoke to a group of women at a church women’s luncheon. After the devotions, it was my turn to entertain. I talked for about 30 minutes, telling jokes and generally doing my comedy routine. They were a stoic bunch. It almost seemed as if they wanted to laugh, but they weren’t sure it was allowed. Fortunately, my daughter-in-law had come along to keep me company. She giggled audibly at some of the funnier lines. Afterwards, some of the ladies came up and told me they had enjoyed it. “You were refreshing,” said one. Refreshing! I felt like an ice-cold Coke on a summer’s day. I guess that’s the next best thing to being funny.

Word #3: My husband forwarded an email from a friend who expressed his appreciation for us. He thanked Doug for presenting things in a kind and gentle way. He added, “and Lois is just quirky enough to help us all feel okay about being human.” Quirky! And not too quirky, but just quirky enough.

I may not be terrific, radiant or humble, but if I can help someone feel okay about being human, I’ll take it as a compliment.

There’s power in a word. I can’t wait to see what I’ll be called next. Just so it’s not Some pig.
